Music has the power to transport us, to evoke emotions, and to heal our souls. We kind of know this, because we do it, feel it and enjoy it. But did you know that listening to your favourite tunes can also have a wonderful impact on your mental wellbeing?

If I look back over the iterations of myself, particularly the last 8 years, music (and journaling) has been the most beautiful and consistent thread that binds it all together.

I have included my favourite advice about how to integrate music into your healing, growth or transformation journey below.

But to begin, here are some incredible benefits of incorporating music into your life:

1. Mood Booster

Music has the uncanny ability to lift your spirits and transform a bad day. Whether you prefer upbeat pop or soulful melodies, the right tunes can instantly elevate your mood.

2. Stress Relief

When life gets overwhelming, music can be your escape. Studies have shown that listening to relaxing music can lower cortisol levels, the stress hormone, promoting relaxation and calmness.

3. Improved Focus and Concentration

Want to enhance your productivity? Try listening to instrumental music while working or studying. It can help block out distractions and improve focus.

4. Enhanced Memory

Music can be a powerful tool for memory enhancement. Research suggests that listening to music can improve memory recall and retention.

5. Pain Management

Believe it or not, music can be a valuable aid in managing pain. It can distract from discomfort and create a sense of calm.

6. Better Sleep

Struggling to get a good night's rest? Soothing music can help you relax and fall asleep faster.

7. Increased Creativity

Music has the power to spark your imagination and inspire creativity. Whether you're a writer, artist, or musician, listening to music can unlock your creative potential.

8. Boosted Immune System

Several studies suggest a link between music and a stronger immune system. Listening to uplifting music can positively impact your overall health.

9. Emotional Release

Music allows us to express and process our emotions in a healthy way. Whether you're feeling happy, sad, or angry, music can provide an outlet.

10. Social Connection

Shared musical experiences can strengthen bonds and create a sense of community. Music brings people together and fosters a sense of belonging.

11. Improved Cognitive Function

Listening to music can stimulate the brain and improve cognitive function, including problem-solving and decision-making skills.

How to Integrate Music into Your Journey

I listen to music all. the. time.

I’m not kidding. It somehow always evokes the right sentiment for the moment, and it helps me connect to my emotions and environment in a privately reflective way.

Music brings back fond memories of family times in years gone by, the many moments of awe and wonder I’ve experienced, challenging times long overcome, and it can instil love, hope, faith, and optimism.

From a technical perspective, I also marvel at the words these masters string together against a backdrop of pure heaven. A true symphony of joy. I have endless respect and admiration for musicians, what a gift they bring to the world.

When music tastes change.

One of the biggest indicators of my growth and evolution is when my music playlists no longer resonate. I search for different sounds, often surprised by what I find, never judging. And so begins a new cycle for me, supported by music.

My favourite advice for using music to connect to your growth is this:

  • Identify your phase: Are you feeling POWERFUL, THOUGHTFUL, or BECOMING?

  • Create a playlist: Name it after your current phase and fill it with songs that resonate right now.

  • Enjoy the ride: Listen to the playlist as long as it feels right.

  • Start anew: When you feel a shift - days, weeks, months or years later, create a new playlist with a new name.

  • Repeat! And boom, you have a music catalogue that reflects your growth and evolution.

I have been doing this for 8 years. And the best part? When I listen back to the playlists, it immediately transports me to that chapter and I remember places I was, what I was doing, and the thoughts and feelings I had. From sitting in my different apartments, to meditating, to dancing alone in my loungeroom after a night out, to contemplating change, to walking my Camino’s, sitting in cafes around the world, being on a bus in Portugal, going to sleep in India, and even shedding tears of happiness here in Germany.

I appreciate those chapters VERY deeply, they remind me to be compassionate towards myself and that growth happens in small and interesting ways.

I also marvel at where I am today and the journey that has been.

Love, Alice
